Environmental Management

  • Activities

    • Air Protection Field

KPIC is striving to prevent air pollutant emission by running the following facilities: flare stack, facilities to prevent Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emission and bad smell, dust collection facility, acid gas removal facility, and automatic measurement system for air pollutant emission.

    • Water Protection Field

When plants in Ulsan and Onsan were constructed, wastewater treatment facilities were installed. The facilities have processed sewage & waste water and waste landfill leachate, which are created during production processes, below the level of emission allowances. Furthermore, final process water processed by waste water-treatment plant is sent to sewerage treatment plant and is not discharged to coastal areas.

    • Waste disposal Field

KPIC has practiced the following to prevent pollution caused by waste: installation of separate collection boxes at processing sites, efficient processing to minimize generation of waste, recycling to the maximum extent, processing of waste according to legal guidelines, and running of in-house landfill facilities.

    • Noise and Vibration Field

      • To improve working environment and to minimize encumbrance to residents, KPIC runs noise prevention facilities and limits night work.
    • Environmental Protection Activities for Neighboring Communities

      • Cleanup work near plant walls: KPIC is doing its best to provide clean environment to its visitors and clients. The last Friday of every month is designated as "Cleanup Day" to collect garbage, to eliminate weed, and to clean up drainage.
      • "One Company in Charge of Reviving One River" Movement: To provide pleasant living and leisure environment to community residents, this campaign is carried out more than twice every month. KPIC is in charge of maintaining cleanness of the Taehwa River and its environs.
  • Global Environmental Management System Operations and ISO14001 Certification

To transform itself into an environment-friendly corporation and to overcome environment-related trade barriers, KPIC has totally revised its management and production facilities in line with environment-oriented directions since 1995. Since then, KPIC has strived to promote environmental management system. In 1996, KPIC has obtained ISO 14001 certification for all its production facilities including those for olefin, PP, and HDPE production. In addition, a third-party auditor reviews KPIC performance in the area of management system improvement every year.

  • Responsible Care

In 1999, KPIC joined Korea RC Council to promote environmental and health improvement in all aspects of its products life cycle from development and production to distribution, usage, and disposal. To continuously promote environment-oriented management and production, KPIC has included environmental, safety, and health guidelines in its management principles. In line with such guidelines, KPIC has carried out voluntary management activities that fulfill social responsibilities of KPIC as a corporation by perfect management of harmful and dangerous materials, prevention of environmental pollution and safety accidents, provision of health and safety to its employees and local residents, and creation of a pleasant neighboring environment. The results of its activities are annually reviewed and submitted to Korea RC Council.

  • Energy Management and Specific Energy Reduction

Since the very beginning of its plant operations, KPIC has established and continuously implemented comprehensive energy management plans. KPIC has tried to save energy by considering the characteristics of process industry. It has actively invested in the energy saving area and installed an improved hexane purification system, waste gas boiler, and high activity catalyst. Furthermore, by carrying out company-wide change management activities, KPIC has achieved process improvement in the area of high-efficiency, low-energy processing.
